October 24th #Standing4BlackGirls Community Action to End Rape Culture and Sexual Violence

According to the Black Women’s Blueprint, a majority of Black girls have experienced sexual abuse by the age of 18. Nationwide, Black girls have some of the highest rates of sexual and domestic violence victimization relative to white girls and other girls of color. From 2003 to 2019, suicide rates of Black girls have increased by 59%. Here in Los Angeles, Black women and girls comprise nearly a quarter of all domestic and sexual violence victims, despite being only 4.3% of the population. Black girls continue to be marginalized in national discourse and policy initiatives around #MeToo AND reproductive health care. In addition, over the past decade, we’ve seen an explosion of gender-based violence against Black women and girls amplified and circulated in toxic ways on social media.

On Saturday, October 24th from 11:30am-1:30pm, the #Standing4BlackGirls coalition, Women’s Leadership Project and other community partners will hold space for survivors in an annual outdoor community action to disrupt rape culture and sexual violence against Black girls and women in Leimert Park, 4343 Leimert Blvd., L.A. 90008 The action will focus on lifting up survivor voices, while calling on policymakers and elected officials to prioritize Gender-Based violence prevention for Black girls, Black women and queer youth and create a dedicated youth space for Black girls and youth in CD8 in commemoration of slain youth Tioni Theus.

Featuring Black female-identified and ally artists, educators, organizers, and vendors.
